Those fees, and more, are coming under the microscope after a study from U.S. telecom research firm Strategy Analytics released Wednesday. It reported that Americans spent $1.1 billion on data plans in 2013, more than the $965 million spent on voice services and $939 million spent on messaging plans. The lion’s share of the fees — $1.1 billion — went to cellular data services, the study said. Those are staggering numbers for the U.S. market, which is seeing a shift in consumer behavior as more and more people choose to access the Internet via mobile devices. By the end of 2013, the U.S. market comprised of 7.2 billion mobile devices, up from 4.5 billion in 2008. “The U.S. is increasingly becoming a data-driven world where consumers are relying on smartphones and tablets to access the Internet for information, emails, social networks and entertainment,” said Jay Stanley, program director for mobile at Strategy Analytics. “The U.S. mobile market has changed dramatically, and consumer demands will continue to influence the next wave of innovation and competition.” The next wave of innovation in mobile will be for data plans, according to the firm. “The mobile data market will continue to grow and take more of the overall market by the end of 2016,” Stanley said. The report predicts that smartphone sales in the U.S. will surpass the sales of traditional feature phones, which include flip phones and PDAs, by 2017. In 2013, wireless carriers delivered some $298.5 billion in voice service revenue, up 10 percent from 2012, with spending on messaging services at $122.3 billion, down 3 percent from 2012, the report said. “As more consumers are choosing mobile devices for voice, messaging and data services, the mobile industry will continue to increase data revenues,” Stanley said. “At the same time, the decline in messaging revenues indicates that consumers are shifting from smartphones to cheaper
